Multi-floor Industrial CCTV with PoE Switch Distribution

Multi-floor Industrial CCTV with PoE Switch Distribution

Multi-floor industrial CCTV with per-floor PoE switch distribution, NVR recording, VLAN separation and an operations manual.

Project context

  • Setting: Mainland multi-floor industrial facility
  • Scale: Multi-floor industrial / light-manufacturing plant

Challenge

A multi-floor industrial site needed IP CCTV coverage with clear floor distribution, PoE switching, recording, and an operations manual pack so shift supervisors could retrieve video without calling a vendor for every incident. Challenges included long horizontal runs, dusty/EMI-prone areas, and limited rack space for NVR and PoE stacks.

Environment

  • Several floors of production / warehouse / office mix
  • Existing or new data pathways; some cameras outdoor or high-bay
  • Central rack room or secured cabinet for NVR
  • Operators need bilingual or at least illustrated SOPs
  • Maintenance windows around production shifts

Solution architecture

Illustrative architecture diagram (generic component names).

Text view of the architecture (each line: component → what it connects to):

NVR / Recording Server-R ↔ Aggregation / core switch
Aggregation / core switch → PoE access SW Floor-1, PoE access SW Floor-2, PoE access SW Floor-3
PoE access SW Floor-1 → Cameras F1 - indoor/outdoor mix
PoE access SW Floor-2 → Cameras F2
PoE access SW Floor-3 → Cameras F3
Ops workstation / mobile app access → NVR / Recording Server-R

PoE distribution principle: place PoE access switches near camera density per floor to stay within Ethernet distance and PoE power budget; uplink cameras’ switches to aggregation; keep CCTV on dedicated VLAN recommendations.

Technical highlights

Camera and imaging (brand-neutral selection dimensions)

  • Indoor vs outdoor housings; IR/night capability; fixed vs varifocal as per survey.
  • Resolution class chosen for identification vs overview goals (documented qualitatively).
  • Mounting: wall / pole / high-bay with vibration notes for industrial floors.

PoE and switching

  • Per-floor PoE switch power budget planned against camera draw + spare.
  • Prefer 802.3af/at class devices as specified in BOM; avoid undersized injectors for multi-camera bunches.
  • Uplinks sized for aggregated burst when many cameras record high-motion scenes.
  • CCTV VLAN recommendation isolates camera discovery traffic from office PCs.

Recording and retention

  • NVR/server disk layout described as RAID level as purchased; retention is a function of bitrate × cameras × days; the sizing method is documented rather than a fixed day count.
  • Time sync (NTP) called out so incident timelines match access logs.

Operations manual pack characteristics

  • Chapters typically: live view · playback · export · user roles · camera online check · escalation.
  • Role accounts—not shared “admin/admin”—recommended; passwords are never included in handover documents.

Resilience

  • UPS for NVR/PoE stack if facilities provide; otherwise note risk of recording gaps on power loss.

Security

  • Change default credentials; management interfaces not exposed to guest Wi‑Fi.
  • Physical cabinet lock for NVR.

Implementation steps

  1. Site survey with floor sketches and light readings for problem corners.
  2. Point plan + PoE switch placement drawing.
  3. BOM (cameras, mounts, PoE SW, NVR, HDD, patch, labels).
  4. Pathway / cabling for camera drops (or reuse).
  5. Rack NVR + PoE stack; address plan.
  6. Camera hang, aim, focus; name cameras by floor-zone codes.
  7. Recording schedule & motion zones as agreed.
  8. Operator training + manual handover.
  9. Acceptance sample playback & export drill.
